The Time Has Come For History To Repeat…

January 1, 2010

Today we’re going to party like it’s 1999! (…or 1993 …or 1982)

Sometimes if we express the same opinion for long enough, we become so comfortable with it that we believe it’s true without ever stopping to reexamine it.

  1999 Jar Jar Binks Calendar

There’s one collectible that I personally obtain every one of, yet advise others to avoid collecting any more of than they have to… Calendars!

Calendars are in the ‘paper goods’ category, and are wonderful tools to track days, appointments, and holidays throughout the year while also getting to see some wonderful monthly images of our favorite film saga. After the year has expired though, there is nothing remarkable about the abundantly produced calendars that would give them any cause at all to retain their retail value, much less appreciate or gain in any value for collectors.

A Star Wars ‘collectible’ with little collectible value is usually just something that takes up space. If that expired collectible can have it’s usefulness or function restored though, just having a purpose again will will also restore some of it’s collectible value.

The problem with calendars is that with the starting day of the year having seven different possibilities (Monday through Friday) multiplied by four for the snag leap year throws into the equation, gives you twenty-eight years required before you have a have at least one calendar for every possible day combination in a year.

Since my ‘opened’ calendar collection starts in 1980, 2005 was the ‘magic’ year for me. It was the final leap year necessary to complete the series of years. Beginning in 2005 every year forward would have a calendar in the past whose days would match the current year.

For instance, this year (2010) if you haven’t purchased a calendar you can use the calendars from either 1982, 1993, or 1999. If you have purchased one already, keep it at the end of the year. It’ll work for you again in 2021! 2016 is out because while January 1, 2016 is on a Friday, the same as this year, 2016 is a leap year so your 2010 calendar will only work through February in 2016. 2021 is the next year that full matches up. Can you hold onto an unopened 2010 calendar for eleven years? I’ll bet you can!

At the left is a chart of compatible calendars all the way up through 2024. It would require charting an additional four and eight years before the calendars for 2000 and 2004 would be able to be used a second time.

Galerie Star Wars Decal Movie Scene Mug

December 30, 2009
A Half Price Mug Has Twice The Value!

A little of post-Christmas shopping online has turned up some great deals, even on items we hadn’t found before!

Today’s super saver is an excellent choice for Star Wars fans, whether they are “collectors” or not. It’s an ‘oversized’ mug featuring Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader squaring off for their lightsaber duel on the second Death Star.

Galerir Star Wars Decal Movie Scene Mug

After my daughter Kay brought me an undocumented, licensed t-shirt that she and her boyfriend Mike had found at K-Mart, I decided to go digging around at the K-Mart website to see what other goodies might be lurking. In the past Galerie has made some nice character shaped mugs, so they’re building a reputation for affordable quality. Add K-Mart saving to the equasion and you’ve got a win/win! This oversized Galerie mug is clearancing out for $4.99 – about half of it’s original price.

Moe Yoda USB Toy from Japan

December 29, 2009
Yoda Moe Image 1 Japanese Star Wars Yoda USB Toy

Master Yoda Will Keep You Company While You Are Hard At Work!

Star Wars licensees who cover multiple nations usually don’t change their products much beyond the packaging language. To get a true flavor for the unique collectors often search out merchandise which is not marketed internationally. Japan is one of the best examples of innovation when it comes to Star Wars. We’ve seen Star Wars laser pointers, mosquito coil holders, soy bottles, coin purses, and now our first Moe (pronounced Moh-eh).

JBox (also sold under JList) is a seller of Japanese mania products. From time to time unique Star Wars merchandise sneaks in and most of the time is sold through without being re-stocked. Today we have come across the new Yoda USB accessory. Here’s what Jbox has to say about it:

“Here’s another wacky USB decorative device that will catch the eye of any innocent bystander wandering by your desk. These Star Wars computer devices are designed to keep you company while you work away at your computer. This Moe version of the Jedi master Yoda has a glowing lightsaber as will his cheeks all glow completely at random. Measures 6 cm (approximately 2 inches) and can be clipped on top of your monitor. Completely powered by your USB. The Force is strong with this one indeed. Requires minimum Windows XP service pack 2, USB 2.0 port and CD-ROM drive for installation”

At the time of discovery there was less than five left in stock. If the force is calling you to investigate further for that Yoda fan who seems to have everything (but not this) then —

This Clone Trooper is FREE (actual postage only)

    December 28, 2009
EPII Clone Trooper   Get This Exclusive Statue For FREE

It’s an unwritten rule that we don’t re-post news from other sites here, but this one is too good to be true, and we’ve given it a couple of days so they could have the scoop.

At noon on Christmas day RebelScum.com posted a link to get this Episode II clone trooper for free. It was formerly only available to Premiere Guild Members as a gift, and unobtainable to rest of us! We suspected that there was a catch such as requiring a minimum qualifying purchase, etc., so we gave it a day and then just couldn’t take it anymore and had to try the link for ourselves. Sure enough, for $10.01 postage, we got the classic mini-bust for FREE.

    From the Gentle Giant website:

“Episode II Blue Clone Trooper Lieutenant Classics Bust – 2008 PGM Gift
    Price: US $0.00
    Item #: 10461 – In Stock

    Limited Edition of 3000
    Stands 5 inches tall

Clone Troopers are identical in form, physical prowess, stamina and mental capacity, yet they still maintained a spark of independent and creative thinking, making them far better suited than droids to handle unexpected turns of warfare.

Commissioned the late Jedi Master Sifo-Dyas, a decade previous to their introduction on the battlefield; the original source of genetic material was an extremely skilled bounty hunter named Jango Fett. Growth acceleration was essential to the production of clones; in a decade’s time, the clones were constantly trained in fighting techniques, vehicular skills and battlefield tactics.

Clone troopers were fully encased in hard white armor, their identical faces concealed behind a t-shaped visor. In the first units, color-coded flashes on the armor denoted rank: green trooper sergeants, blue lieutenants, red captains, and yellow commanders. The clones designated for command duty were specifically trained in that capacity. By the end of the war, color-designation came to signify not rank, but individual units, who often became more customized with mission specific gear and armor modifications.

Gentle Giant’s 2008 Premier Guild Gift is the Episode II Blue Clone Trooper Lieutenant Classics Bust. The figure stands approximately 5 inches tall.”

We know that this story will be read over and over in future years and people will wish they were reading this now. The offer ends December 31st *or* when the last of the Clone Trooper Episode II Classic Mini-Busts are gone. We checked again before posting this article and there were some left. For ten bucks, GO GET ONE!

Star Wars Gets Busted Up – Again.

    October 1, 2009
A New Series of Collectible Busts from Takara Tomy Arts.

In Japan they’re called gashapons. A Gashapon is a series of blind packed toys that children (and collectors) can purchase one at a time and trade with other people. Usually the set includes one or more chase figures – special pieces that are only inserted into random boxes. This new series labeled as: Plaster Status Collection has five set pieces and one chase piece.

Each of the mini-busts is 40cm-60cm in height and this first wave comes from the Star Wars classic trilogy. The characters in the main set are Chewbacca, Han Solo, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Leia. The price printed on the box is 300 yen each (currently around $3.25 USD) and the going price on eBay is around $8 each plus postage.

This particular set has been flagged as an eBay Treasure since the set of six – five plus the chase figure – is $19. Calculate it out and you’ll see that this relatively new eBay seller is selling the set for the regular retail price, plus postage… and you don’t even have to chase down the chase figure. (BTW: the chase figure is Han Solo in Carbonite.)

Don’t let this treasure get away or you could end up paying up to $70 for this set of six from other eBay sellers! Then Captain Rex would have to call out the clones and bring you to justice.

Inventory Your Collection At Home Or Online!
The collection inventory software has been at a very stable version 2.10b for close to 2 years now. Last Fall we announced a new version 3 coming out “soon”. Well, 9 months later version 3 is still at the ‘almost finished’ phase. It was put on hold while we developed a (much requested) online version!
The beta copies of WishBase version 3 communicate with the online database, allowing you to synchronize your online listings with those on your local system.

If you’re not already a database user, you can begin using the online version with full confidence that once version 3 is released, your collection files will transfer back just as easily.

A new feature of the system is the ability to make your ‘wanted’ and ‘for sale’ listings viewable by the public! The online report generator is just as robust as the highly acclaimed reports developed for version 2.1.

The database has over 61,000 pre-defined entries (Category, Manufacturer, Country, Group, Name, Detail, Variation, Part Number, UPC, ISBN, etc.) and all you have to do is pick your item and link it to your list! Imagine all the typing you’ll save!

WishBase (the database) has been updated bi-monthly since 2003, keeping pace with the collecting community entry-by-entry.

Give it a try today! Click Here.
